The timbers and “ship’s knees” (braces supporting the horizontal beam between the kitchen and living room) were rescued during the demolition of a historic barn. Ship’s knees were used in construction of wooden ships during the 1800′s and are made from the lower truck and root section of the tamarack tree, where the truck naturally curves into the horizontal root.
