BARN TO GUEST HOUSE

The second phase of the summer cottage renovation transformed the barn into a guest house. Eastern white pine was used extensively, including the downstairs ceiling and cabinets. White pine tends to yellow with age so the lumber was treated with a UV protector to keep it from darkening.

The island’s copper counter top, which was requested by the owner as it reminds him of his favorite diners, will develop a wonderful patina, changing with each wipe and spill. Space was a premium; storage was maximized by installing the refrigerator and drawers under the stairs.

The shower door, which resembles a sliding barn door, and the hurricane lamp wall sconces from Hubbardton Forge (Vermont) reflect the building’s heritage.

Even small spaces need a well designed lighting plan; the bath’s skylight provides natural lighting, while the floating light shelf with small  puck lights and a hidden strip light at the rear provide additional lighting.
